A villa with its own pool is the classic way to do Marrakech with family or friends: your own garden, your own timetable, and a swim between the souks and dinner. But villas differ more than the photos suggest. This guide goes through what to check, in order of what matters most, then compares the villas we host in and around Marrakech.
The pool question first
Marrakech has hot summers and cool winters, and the pool has to match your dates.
- Outdoor pool, unheated: perfect from late spring to early autumn. From November to March the water is cold: January nights average around 6°C, even when the days are sunny.
- Outdoor pool, heated: ask from which date it is heated, to what temperature, and whether heating costs extra. It is often an extra, and some pools can't be heated at all.
- Indoor pool: the only sure way to swim in December, January and February.
Then look at the pool itself: its size, how much of the day it gets sun or shade, its depth, and whether it is fenced or covered if you travel with young children.
Among our villas, Villa Tulum has a heated indoor pool as well as an outdoor pool, and Riad Safran has an indoor pool: ask us whether it is heated for your dates. The other villas have outdoor pools, and the same question applies.
Group size and layout
Count beds as well as bedrooms, and look at the bathrooms: with eight or ten people, bedrooms with their own bathrooms make mornings easier.
- For up to eight: Villa Akenza has four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. Villa Jardins de l'Atlas has three bedrooms and four bathrooms.
- For up to ten: Villa Tulum has five suites; Riad Safran has five bedrooms and six bathrooms; the five-bedroom villa with a pool and hot tub has five bedrooms and five bathrooms.
Travelling with children? Ask for twin beds or a crib before you book, and check that every bedroom has air conditioning for summer and heating for winter.
Staff and services
The villa should be cleaned before you arrive, with fresh linen and towels, and someone should answer when you call. Beyond that, services vary from villa to villa:
- Housekeeping during the stay: ask how often, and whether it is included.
- A cook or chef: usually on request and paid separately, with the groceries on top. Riad Safran carries a private chef in its name: ask us what the chef's service covers for your dates.
- Transfers and drivers: from the airport, and for days out to the Atlas or the Agafay desert.
- Massages and treatments at the villa, if you want them.
Where the villa sits
Location decides how your days work. A villa ten minutes from the Medina lets you go in for the morning and be back by the pool for lunch; a villa on the Atlas side gives you space, views and quiet, and longer drives.
- Close to the centre: Riad Safran is ten minutes' drive from the Medina, and the five-bedroom villa is near the city centre.
- Waky Marrakech and the Route de l'Ourika: Villa Jardins de l'Atlas is inside the Waky Marrakech resort, less than twenty minutes' drive from the centre, and Villa Akenza is in Aghouatim, on the same side of the city.

Wellness and play
These are the extras that keep a group at home happily:
- Hammam and sauna: Villa Tulum.
- Hot tub: the five-bedroom villa.
- Home gym: Villa Akenza.
- Games: a billiards room at the five-bedroom villa; a badminton court, table tennis and a football goal at Villa Tulum.
- A wakeboard lake and golf: at Waky Marrakech, around Villa Jardins de l'Atlas. Our Waky Marrakech guide explains how the cable park works.
